Finding your next watch

Choose the mood before you choose the movie

A small change to the question can turn a long search into a useful shortlist.

WhoStreamsIt editorial2 minute read

What is the best film to watch? That question leaves you with almost every film ever made. What kind of evening do you want? That gives you something to work with. Start with a mood, then use the story and genre to narrow the field.

For an evening of tension

Decide which kind of uncertainty appeals to you. A crime story can make the question of who did it central. A thriller may tell you who poses the danger and make you wait for the consequences. Horror can turn a familiar place or relationship into something unsettling. Read the premise closely enough to distinguish those experiences.

For something to discuss afterwards

Look for a conflict that you and your viewing partner might see differently. A family decision, an uncomfortable workplace or an argument about responsibility can leave more to talk about than the mechanics of a surprise ending. Our viewing notes point towards the kinds of questions a premise raises without presenting them as a verdict on the film.

For a change of scene

Try a setting or point of view you rarely choose. That could mean a historical drama, a speculative world or an ordinary situation seen through a different character. You do not need a large list. Pick two contrasting possibilities, read their introductions and keep the one that makes you more curious.

Use popularity as a doorway

A title attracting attention is a useful way into a conversation. It is not an obligation or a promise that you will enjoy it. Browse our current selection, save the films and series that fit your mood, and leave the rest for another evening.
