A reason to be curious

Why it may suit you.

Choose this for the disturbing idea of a familiar face becoming untrustworthy. The combination of a child's perspective, family conflict and supernatural intrusion makes it a fit for viewers drawn to domestic horror rather than a sprawling monster mythology.

When home stops feeling safe

The frightening idea at the centre of Other Mommy is a failure of recognition. Bella knows the person who should make her feel protected, yet something uses that same appearance to approach her. The threat therefore reaches into ordinary family life before anyone can treat it as a problem with clear rules. For a child already trying to understand tension between her parents, deciding whom to trust becomes an urgent practical question.

That setup gives the film two connected areas of interest: a supernatural intruder and a household whose members do not always understand one another. Watching how the adults respond to Bella is as relevant as watching what the entity does. Their existing relationships shape the meaning of an apparently impossible experience.

The family and the filmmakers

Jessica Chastain plays Ursula Martin, while Jay Duplass plays Bella's father, Russ. Arabella Olivia Clark is Bella, the child through whom the danger first enters the story. Dichen Lachman and Karen Allen are among the supporting performers. The family relationships are useful to keep in mind because the film's central image deliberately makes a familiar person seem unfamiliar.

Rob Savage directs a screenplay by Nathan Elston, adapting Josh Malerman's novel Incidents Around the House. James Wan is a producer. Readers can approach it as a screen interpretation of that book rather than expecting every incident or relationship to be reproduced unchanged.

Choosing your horror night

This is an adult supernatural thriller with bloody violence and strong language in its US rating. A young protagonist does not make it a children's ghost story. It is a more natural choice for a group interested in disturbing family situations than for viewers seeking a light Halloween adventure.

A useful question to carry into the film is what makes an account believable when the person describing it is a child. You can explore that without knowing the entity's eventual explanation. Avoid detailed plot recaps beforehand if the uncertainty around its behaviour is the main attraction for you.
