Tulsa King

Starting over is not the same as being welcomed back

Dwight Manfredi leaves prison expecting his years of loyalty to count for something. Being sent from New York to Tulsa gives him an assignment that can also be read as a rejection. The move places him between two questions: how to build power in a new place, and how much trust to retain in the organisation that put him there.

The long absence adds a second kind of displacement. Even methods that once worked may need to be reconsidered in a changed social and commercial environment. The premise therefore offers more than a turf-expansion story. Dwight has to work out which parts of his identity are useful experience and which are habits other people no longer have a reason to respect.

Dwight and his new circle

Sylvester Stallone plays Dwight, also known as The General. Martin Starr portrays Bodhi and Jay Will plays Tyson Mitchell, two important figures in the unfamiliar environment around him. Vincent Piazza appears as Vince Antonacci, Annabella Sciorra as Joanne Manfredi and Chris Caldovino as Goodie Carangi among the wider ensemble.

Taylor Sheridan created the series. The mix of people linked to Dwight's earlier life and people he encounters after the relocation gives loyalty different meanings. An old associate may appeal to history, while a new ally may judge him by what he can offer now. Those relationships supply a practical way to follow the changing criminal arrangements.

A crime drama with an outsider's perspective

Start with the opening episode so the release from prison and the Tulsa assignment establish what Dwight thinks he has been promised. The story then builds through the contacts he makes and the obligations that follow. Beginning in a later season would miss the basis of that new circle.

This may appeal if you enjoy a criminal protagonist forced to adjust socially as well as strategically. The contrast between an established self-image and an unfamiliar environment provides room for humour alongside the crime plot. A useful viewing question is whether Dwight is building something new or trying to reconstruct the recognition he believes he should already have earned.
