Miguel wants to become a musician, but his family has forbidden music for generations. A journey into the Land of the Dead brings him together with Héctor and offers a chance to understand why. Pixar's adventure connects a boy's ambition with the stories, photographs and memories through which a family keeps its past alive.

A reason to be curious

Why it may suit you.

Music and family history give this adventure two accessible points of entry. It is a thoughtful choice for a family movie night that can lead into conversations about relatives, remembering people and deciding which inherited rules still make sense in the present.

A musical ambition meets a family's rules

Miguel wants to play music, but the Rivera family's long-standing ban makes that ambition a source of conflict at home. His admiration for performer Ernesto de la Cruz offers one version of the future he wants. The stories told within his own family point in a different direction, leaving him to decide which accounts of the past deserve his trust.

Entering the Land of the Dead turns that disagreement into a journey through family memory. Miguel meets Héctor, whose own hopes connect the living and the dead, and begins to investigate why music has such a charged place in his family's history. The adventure therefore links a child's wish for independence with the need to understand where a rule came from.

The voices and the people behind the film

Anthony Gonzalez voices Miguel, Gael García Bernal voices Héctor and Benjamin Bratt voices Ernesto. Alanna Ubach plays Mamá Imelda, Renée Victor plays Abuelita and Ana Ofelia Murguía plays Mamá Coco. Lee Unkrich directs, Adrian Molina co-directs, and Molina shares screenplay credit with Matthew Aldrich. Pixar produced the animation.

The setting draws on the Mexican tradition of Día de los Muertos, with family remembrance central to the fictional world's rules. It is useful to distinguish the film's invented adventure from an exhaustive explanation of the tradition. The names, offerings and family practices shown can instead provide starting points for further learning after watching.

For a family conversation about remembrance

The US PG classification cites thematic material. Death, separation and the fear of being forgotten are important subjects, even though the presentation is animated and musical. Families may want space for questions afterwards, particularly if a child has recently experienced bereavement.

A gentle discussion can begin with which stories about relatives get repeated and which are rarely told. Another question concerns whether pursuing a talent has to mean rejecting the people who raised you. Miguel's situation brings those ideas together without requiring a simple choice between family and independence, and the mystery is best discovered without reading the later revelations in advance.
