Katherine inherits a hotel and moves in with her two children, hoping to make the business work. The property comes with residents who are already dead, including her brother Nathan. Running the Undervale becomes a family undertaking in which keeping guests happy means negotiating with ghosts who have little reason to ever check out.

The premise offers an easy route into adult animation for viewers who like supernatural ideas with everyday consequences. Hospitality problems, sibling baggage and parenting all remain relevant when the residents are ghosts, giving the horror setup room for character comedy rather than suspense alone.

A family business with permanent residents
The Undervale combines two situations that are already difficult without supernatural assistance: taking over a business and moving a family into a new home. Katherine must try to make the hotel function while living alongside guests for whom normal checkout arrangements mean very little. The dead are part of the establishment, which changes the practical question from how to remove a haunting to how to coexist with it.
The connection to Katherine's brother makes that problem personal. Nathan is among the ghosts, so the property also becomes a place where family business cannot easily be concluded. Inheritance usually transfers an asset; here it also transfers relationships, disagreements and obligations that remain capable of answering back.
Meet the voices behind the hotel
Eliza Coupe voices Katherine, Will Forte voices Nathan and Skyler Gisondo voices Ben. Natalie Palamides provides Esther's voice, while Jimmi Simpson plays Abaddon. The mix of family members and supernatural residents gives the premise several kinds of friction: the needs of children, the judgement of siblings and the demands of people who may have been inconvenienced for a very long time.
Matt Roller created the series and serves as showrunner. His previous writing work includes Rick and Morty, Community and Archer, and the production is explicitly positioned as adult animation. That context is more useful than assuming a drawn family and a haunted building make this a children's ghost story.
Comedy inside a horror framework
The attraction is the opportunity to apply mundane questions to an extraordinary place. Who is responsible for the guests? Which family member understands the business? How do you establish authority in a building with its own population? The horror premise supplies possibilities, while the domestic and workplace setup gives those possibilities something recognisable to disrupt.
Start with the first episode so the inheritance and principal relationships are established before moving through the later stories. It could suit viewers who want supernatural comedy with a recurring ensemble, especially if the idea of an afterlife full of petty disagreements is more appealing than a mystery devoted solely to explaining a ghost. Check the local age classification before choosing it for family viewing; animation alone is not a suitability guide.
