The friend who brings trouble home
Sean's return should be an opportunity for old friends to reconnect. Instead, his concealed work as a CIA agent brings their shared past into contact with an international emergency. The others know the person who used to lead their childhood group, but that familiarity does not equip them for the situations his adult life creates.
This gives the adventure a useful difference in perspective. One member of the group has professional experience of danger; the people around him have relationships, habits and grievances formed in a much more ordinary setting. The challenge is not only to escape pursuit, but to find out whether the old friendship still works when the circumstances become radically different.
An action film built from a toy brand
John Cena plays Sean, joined by Jessica Biel as Aimee, Sam Richardson as Crosby, Teyonah Parris as Charmaine and Arturo Castro as Ted. Sam Hargrave directs, and David Coggeshall is the credited writer. Apple Original Films, Skydance and Mattel Films are associated with the production.
The Matchbox name identifies the inspiration for the project rather than an existing narrative a viewer has to study. There is no required reading list of characters from the toys. The film supplies its own group, mission and relationships, making the premise easy to enter even if the brand primarily means a box of miniature cars from childhood.
Planning the watch
The film runs a little over two hours and carries a US PG-13 classification for action, violence and language. That makes it a different proposition from a short animated toy adventure. Consider it for viewers who enjoy a team being pulled into a mission before every member is ready for it.
The childhood connection also creates a useful discussion beyond the chase: how much does knowing someone years ago tell you about who they are now?
