A reason to be curious

Why it may suit you.

The emotional hook is immediately understandable: how do you protect a friendship while life pulls you in different directions? The Filipino folklore setting adds a distinctive imaginative world, making this a good option for families who enjoy fantasy with personal stakes.

What would a friendship be without its memories?

Jo and Raissa have been close since childhood, but finishing school means preparing for separate lives. Their final celebration together leads through a portal to Nakali, an island populated by creatures connected to the Filipino stories they grew up hearing. The journey begins at a moment when the friends are already wondering what distance will do to their bond.

Returning home carries an unusual possible cost: the memories of their friendship. That raises the stakes beyond escaping an unfamiliar place. They must consider what it would mean to reach a familiar world while losing the shared experiences that make another person important. The adventure turns a common anxiety about growing apart into a concrete choice.

The voices behind the island

H.E.R. voices Jo and Liza Soberano voices Raissa. Dave Franco plays Raww, a were-dog who accompanies them, while Lea Salonga voices the feared Manananggal. Jenny Slate, Manny Jacinto, Dolly de Leon, Jo Koy and Ronny Chieng are also in the voice cast. Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado write and direct, with Mark Swift producing for DreamWorks Animation.

The folklore provides the island with specific cultural reference points, while the friendship offers an accessible emotional starting point. Viewers do not need to know every creature before watching. For families interested in learning more afterwards, the individual names provide a better starting point than treating all the figures as interchangeable fantasy monsters.

Choosing it for a family audience

The US PG classification includes scary action, violence, rude humour, language and thematic material. Animation alone is therefore not enough to judge whether it suits a particular young viewer. The central danger involves both frightening creatures and the possible loss of a valued relationship.

A gentle discussion afterwards could ask which memories friends share differently and which small experiences become important over time. The premise also invites a useful distinction between changing a friendship and erasing it. Those questions can connect the fantasy journey to the ordinary experience of changing schools, moving away or beginning a new stage of life.
