A reason to be curious

Why it may suit you.

A hotel already contains the traces of other people's lives, making it a fitting setting for this mixture of grief and haunting. Try this if you favour supernatural mysteries rooted in a particular place, with an outsider slowly discovering what the locals know.

A personal errand in an unfamiliar hotel

Ohm Bauman travels to a remote Irish hotel with his parents' ashes. The journey has a private purpose before any supernatural explanation enters it, which makes the setting more than a convenient place to strand a visitor. He arrives carrying a relationship with the past that cannot be resolved simply by reaching the destination.

Stories about a witch associated with the honeymoon suite introduce another kind of past: local accounts that may be folklore, warning or something harder to dismiss. Disturbing experiences force Ohm to consider what those stories mean in relation to his own situation. The uncertainty is not only whether a place is haunted, but how a visitor decides which account of it to believe.

The hotel and its inhabitants

Adam Scott plays Ohm, with Peter Coonan as desk clerk Mal, David Wilmot as Jerry and Florence Ordesh as bartender Fiona. Will O'Connell plays bellhop Alby, and Brendan Conroy plays hotel owner Cob. Damian McCarthy writes and directs this original story.

Those local characters matter because a hotel is both a temporary refuge for a guest and a working environment for people who remain there. Their familiarity with the building need not translate into a complete or reassuring explanation for Ohm. Tracking who knows the place, who controls access and who treats a story seriously gives the mystery a clear set of questions.

For a folklore-inflected horror evening

The US R classification cites violent and disturbing content and language. Consider Hokum if you are drawn to a setting where grief, local stories and an unfamiliar building can all shape the same experience. It is an adult horror choice despite the everyday form of its initial travel errand.

A useful discussion afterwards could examine the difference between scepticism and certainty. Refusing to believe a story does not necessarily mean understanding what is happening, just as accepting a legend does not explain every event. That tension gives a viewer room to remain curious without deciding in advance that every disturbing experience must have one simple cause.
