A reason to be curious

Why it may suit you.

The central contradiction gives this more than a standard hired-killer setup: a man trained for violence needs to become a dependable caregiver. Consider it if you want an action premise tied closely to grief, parenthood and the practical demands of faith.

Character-led actionFamily dramaMoral conflict

Three responsibilities that cannot be kept apart

Latif's life brings together professional violence, religious belief and the responsibilities of a parent. The death of his wife makes the conflicts between those parts of his identity impossible to postpone. Protecting his children now requires decisions made while he is also grieving and while forces connected to his work are closing in.

The journey across Houston gives that conflict a physical route. Each immediate problem exists alongside a larger question about the life Latif can offer his family. He cannot approach fatherhood as simply another task to complete with the skills of his profession, yet leaving those skills behind may not seem straightforward in the situation he faces.

Mahershala Ali and Bassam Tariq's central character

Mahershala Ali plays Latif in a film written and directed by Bassam Tariq. John Cho appears as Hwan, Giancarlo Esposito as Abdul Malik and Abubakr Ali as Hatty. Tramell Tillman, Tiffany Boone and Laith Nakli are also in the ensemble. Adia and Jahleel Kamara play Latif's children, Fatiha and Qadir.

The unusually repeated title draws on a tradition emphasising a mother's claim to care and respect. Within the premise, the absence of the children's mother makes that emphasis particularly relevant. It is an entry point for thinking about family obligations, rather than a reason to assume that one character's choices represent an entire religious community.

An action drama with family stakes

The US R classification includes violence, bloody images, sexual content and language. The combination of fatherhood and faith should therefore not be mistaken for a gentle family film. It is better suited to viewers interested in the moral pressure placed on an action protagonist as well as the dangers surrounding him.

Afterwards, consider whether care can be reduced to physical protection. Children may need safety, attention, stability and a different example of adulthood, and those needs can pull a parent in different directions. The premise gives room to discuss that conflict without assuming that every violent action becomes justified merely because its stated motive is love.
