Decades after Avatar Aang's adventures, Korra takes on the responsibility of maintaining balance in a changing world. Her training leads her to Republic City, where elemental bending exists alongside new technologies and political tensions. As she works to master airbending with Tenzin, she encounters challenges that strength and confidence alone cannot settle.

The later setting offers a way to revisit the Avatar world while asking different questions about power and social change. Korra's unfinished training gives the larger conflicts a personal scale. It is a good fit for viewers who enjoy fantasy worlds developing beyond the events of an earlier story.
Korra inherits the role of Avatar in a world that has changed since Aang's adventures. Republic City places elemental bending alongside industry, new technologies and arguments about how society should be organised. Being able to command extraordinary abilities does not automatically settle who should have authority or what different groups consider fair.
Her unfinished airbending training gives that broad problem a personal form. Korra has confidence and considerable strength, yet the responsibilities of her role demand kinds of understanding she still has to develop. The setting therefore creates room to ask what balance means when maintaining an old arrangement may not satisfy the people living inside it.
Korra, her friends and her teacher
Janet Varney voices Korra. David Faustino and P. J. Byrne voice brothers Mako and Bolin, while Seychelle Gabriel voices Asami Sato. J. K. Simmons plays Tenzin, Korra's airbending teacher, and Mindy Sterling voices Lin Beifong. The friends and mentors around Korra bring different skills and different relationships to the city's institutions.
Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko created the series as a continuation of the animated Avatar world. Its seasons are also presented as books: Air, Spirits, Change and Balance. Those labels belong to the television structure and should not be confused with a requirement to read a separate novel before watching.
Should Aang's story come first?
Avatar: The Last Airbender gives the clearest introduction to the world and makes returning names and family connections more meaningful. The Legend of Korra nevertheless centres on a new protagonist with a new set of immediate problems. If you begin here, allow the opening episodes to establish the city and Korra's role before consulting extensive lore summaries.
Watch the books in order because the world and relationships change through the series. It may appeal if you enjoy fantasy that allows its setting to develop socially as well as geographically. A useful question is what happens when a person expected to preserve harmony meets people who believe the existing order is precisely the problem that needs to change.
